Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s daughter Vivienne has completed another required step in her effort to legally remove “Pitt” from her name.
The 18-year-old filed a petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court on July 21 requesting that her name be changed from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie. Court documents reviewed by PEOPLE list her reason simply as “personal.”
Vivienne has now completed the public-notice requirement by publishing notice of the proposed change in the Los Angeles Daily Journal for four consecutive weeks. Page Six reported that the notices appeared July 24, July 31, Aug. 7 and Aug. 14.
Vivienne’s petition is scheduled for a Nov. 2 hearing, when the court can consider the request and any properly filed objections.
The Newspaper Notice Gives Others a Chance to Formally Object
The California Courts’ official guidance for adult name changes explains that applicants are generally required to publish an Order to Show Cause in an approved newspaper once a week for four consecutive weeks. The requirement provides public notice before a judge considers the petition.
According to court documents reviewed by TheWrap, anyone who wants to oppose Vivienne’s request must submit a written objection explaining the reason at least two court days before the hearing and appear before the court. Vivienne filed nine days after she and twin brother Knox turned 18. She is now an adult, so the petition is her own legal request.
She Was Already Using ‘Vivienne Jolie’ on Broadway in 2024
Vivienne’s use of “Jolie” without “Pitt” predates the court filing by more than two years. In 2024, she was credited as “Vivienne Jolie” in the Playbill for the Broadway musical The Outsiders, where she worked as a producer’s assistant while Angelina Jolie served as one of the show’s producers.
The project grew out of Vivienne’s enthusiasm for the musical after seeing an earlier production at La Jolla Playhouse. Jolie later said her daughter took the assistant role seriously and would remind her about details and responsibilities during the production process.
During an April 2024 opening-night interview with Extra, Jolie and members of the creative team discussed Vivienne’s involvement, with composer and co-book writer Justin Levine praising her observations and commitment to the production.
The Outsiders went on to win four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical and Best Sound Design of a Musical.
Maddox and Zahara Have Pending Name-Change Hearings of Their Own
Vivienne is not the only adult child of Jolie and Pitt to seek removal of “Pitt” through the courts. Maddox filed to become Maddox Chivan Jolie, while Zahara is seeking the name Zahara Marley Jolie. Both have also completed the newspaper-publication stage of California’s process.
Maddox’s hearing is scheduled for Sept. 14, while Zahara’s is set for Sept. 28. Zahara had already been publicly using “Zahara Marley Jolie,” including when her name was announced at her Spelman College graduation, and Maddox had used “Maddox Jolie” professionally in connection with his work on his mother’s film Couture.
Their sister Shiloh completed the process earlier. After filing on her 18th birthday in 2024 and fulfilling the required public-notice procedure, a judge granted her petition and legally changed her name from Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt to Shiloh Nouvel Jolie.
