Juliet Mills and Maxwell Caulfield are still being asked about the 18 years between them.
The actors, who married in 1980 after meeting while working on The Elephant Man, discussed their age-gap relationship on the Still Here Hollywood podcast.
People reported that Mills is now 84, while Caulfield is 66. When they began dating, he was 21 and she was 39.
Caulfield said the age difference “didn’t occur” to him at the time. Mills said she felt the same way.

Caulfield said he was drawn to Mills’ energy, not her age. “It didn’t occur to me and Juliet maintains to this day it didn’t really occur to her, either,” he said on the podcast, according to People.
He remembered Mills as youthful, magnetic and easy to connect with. The relationship moved quickly, but he said the age difference was not the part that defined it for either of them.
Mills also said they did not spend much time discussing the number. She described their connection as immediate and natural, with conversation coming easily from the beginning.
They Met While Working on The Elephant Man
Just Jared reported that Mills and Caulfield met while starring in a stage production of The Elephant Man.
They began dating in 1980 and married later that same year. More than four decades later, they are still together.
Caulfield is best known for Grease 2, Empire Records, Dynasty and The Colbys. Mills’ long career includes Nanny and the Professor, The Love Boat, Passions and decades of stage work.
Mills Said the Bond Felt Familiar From the Start
Mills said she and Caulfield had a lot in common when they met. They were both English, both actors and both able to talk to each other with unusual ease.
She also told the podcast that she believes in past lives and felt as if she had known Caulfield before. To her, that helped explain why the relationship felt familiar so quickly.
They Have Continued to Support Each Other’s Careers
People reported that Mills and Caulfield have continued to work together, including in a 2024 performance of Love Letters in Bennington, Vermont.
Mills also supported Caulfield at the 2024 Los Angeles premiere of Netflix’s The Merry Gentlemen. Caulfield appears in the film, which stars Britt Robertson and Chad Michael Murray.
