A Halloween photograph on Martha Stewart’s personal Instagram drew accusations that her costume mocked people experiencing homelessness. The image was later removed from the carousel, according to TMZ.

The circulating image shows the 85-year-old lifestyle entrepreneur outside with two dogs, wearing distressed clothing and what appears to be dirt on her face. She holds a clipboard with a sign reading, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!”

The photograph appeared alongside images promoting Stewart’s QVC candles. The accompanying caption read, “My QVC candles are perfect for Halloween!!!”

Stewart’s intended character and the reason for the removal remain unconfirmed. Page Six reported on November 1 that her representative had not responded to its request for comment.

TV Insider reported that the image remained visible on Stewart’s verified Facebook page when it published its Sunday coverage.

Posts about the image appeared in Reddit‘s r/popculturechat and r/BravoRealHousewives communities. The r/popculturechat poster said they had seen the picture on Stewart’s account and that comments were subsequently hidden and blocked.

“She’s been rich for a very long time and is so out of touch with the real world,” one Reddit commenter wrote, as quoted by TV Insider.

Stewart Presented Her Halloween Collection From Her Farm

Stewart had been promoting her seasonal collection for weeks. In a September 19 entry on The Martha Blog, she described the previous day’s QVC broadcasts from her farm in Bedford, New York.

QVC host Shawn Killinger joined remotely from Pennsylvania for the afternoon Halloween presentation. Harry Slatkin visited the farm to introduce their collaborative products, including ceramic pumpkin candle sets and harvest reed diffusers. The broader collection also included illuminated decorations and flameless candles.

She Recently Described Her Role in Her Personal Instagram

In a September 24 interview with AARP, Stewart was asked whether a provocative MAC cosmetics advertisement had been her idea. “Of course! If it’s on my Instagram, it’s pretty much my idea,” she replied.

She acknowledged having help with social media while describing the posts on @marthastewart48 as generally her own. She identified that as her personal account, distinct from the broader Martha Stewart brand. The interview concerned her usual posting practices and a different advertisement; it does not establish who selected or uploaded the Halloween photograph.

Her Today Appearance Featured an Olympics-Inspired Outfit

Stewart joined NBC’s Today Halloween celebration on October 30 in an Olympics-inspired outfit, alongside Craig Melvin dressed as her longtime friend Snoop Dogg. Her blog’s October 31 entry included photographs from the appearance and recalled costumes from earlier years.

During the broadcast, she demonstrated a no-bake spiderweb cheesecake, mulled cider with carved apple heads and goulash. The show’s hosts were celebrating NBC’s 100th anniversary with costumes drawn from its programs and personalities.

For her 2024 Martha Stewart Halloween cover, she wore a queen costume inspired by Elizabeth I. The production team fashioned her scepter from a curtain rod and made the royal orb from a plastic ornament.
